Our visit to Aspen Flying Club

AFCLogo

Every once and awhile, we highlight a customer we're really impressed with. We visited Aspen Flying Club last fall and thought you might like to hear about them.

For starters, Aspen Flying Club has a great location within flying distance of the Rocky Mountains near Denver, Colorado.  Location is a big factor but we think its team and diverse fleet of over 40 aircraft is a big part of the club's success.  At Aspen, they're not just training pilots, they've created an atmosphere where people can connect and have fun together as they pursue their passion.

It's main location is at Centennial Airport (KAPA) and through their recent partnership with Alliance Flight Training, members of Aspen Flying Club also have access to the rental fleet at Front Range Airport (KFTG).  No longer do students who obtain their license have to go elsewhere to fly.  With such a comprehensive fleet, students are assured they will have a plane to rent at Aspen Flying Club. Through monthly club fly-outs, many of the students and pilots team up to fly together.

Why does Aspen Flying Club use Flight Schedule Pro?  "With such a large and diverse fleet, it’s important we have a system that can keep up with our demands.  We log well over 1000 hours each month.  Without a robust and automated system like Flight Schedule Pro, we would never be able to schedule and dispatch so many flights. Our members like Flight Schedule Pro because of its simple and intuitive user interface.  There’s no need for training.  After setting up an account, our members can easily figure out how to schedule flights on their own.  They also love the iPhone App." - Chris Dillis, President, Aspen Flying Club.

Be sure to visit Aspen Flying Club's website,  www.aspenflyingclub.com, or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/aspenflyingclub.

We're excited to announce that we're building the next generation of pilot records management.

AngelFlightLogoFriday, November 21, 2014 from 6:30 - 11:00 PM, at Starlight Theatre, Angel Flight Central will celebrate its 10th Annual Wine Flight!

K-State Wins Loening Trophy!

Article Courtesy of Kansas State University News and Communications Services.  Written by Julee Cobb, 785-826-2642, julee@k-state.edu

Kansas State LogoSALINA — The Kansas State University Salina Flight Team has landed the prestigious honor of being recognized as the most outstanding all-around aviation program in the country — and has the trophy to prove it.

For the first time in school history, the K-State Salina team was awarded the Loening Trophy at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association's SAFECON National Championship, May 12-17, in Columbus, Ohio. The team finished 13th overall at the event.

"The moment our name was called was absolutely surreal, and on top of that, we were given a standing ovation," said Tom Karcz, assistant professor of aviation and K-State Salina Flight Team faculty adviser. "The Loening Trophy is a piece of history and we can't wait to display it on the Salina campus."

The trophy is made of Tiffany's pure silver and is uninsurable and irreplaceable. It will be hand-delivered to the campus where it will remain until next year's national competition.

The team has 18 members, with 12 members for the competition team after a try-out process.

"This event isn't just about titles and trophies. It gave our students the opportunity to network with fellow competitors and potential employers,” Karcz said. "Aviation organizations and companies from across the nation attend, too, and one of our team members even had a job interview while we were there."

The flight team received support throughout the year from the K-State Salina aviation department; the K-State Salina Student Governing Association; Verna Fitzsimmons, CEO and dean of K-State Salina; individual donors; and a variety of corporations.

For more information on the flight team, the competition or K-State Salina's professional pilot program, contact Karcz at 785-826-2979 or tkarcz@k-state.edu.

iPhone controlled paper airplanes

Powerup-11
Guess what this is?

Who among us hasn't taken a piece of paper and folded it into a paper plane?  And then let it fly on a direct path toward our greatest arch enemy?  Brings back memories of playing with my cousins on cool summer evenings as the lightning bugs flitted about and the grown-ups played croquet....

I'm not even going to write about this.  Instead, I'm giving you the link to the site.  This is just too much fun and too cool to miss:  Here's the link and have fun:

Medallion Foundation Supporting Nenana Pilot Program.....

Longtime FSP client, Medallion Foundation, http://medallionfoundation.org/, has provided Nenana High School in Nenana, Alaska with a new flight simulator!  The simulator will add to the school's new aviation education program, including flying skills and aircraft maintenance. Nenana City Public School (K-12) is located 300 miles north of Anchorage.  It serves both local and rural students.

“Medallion is about changing the safety culture at a young age as these students learn to fly promoting and educating safety first, so as they grow and advance the culture is already learned,” said Jerry Rock, executive director of the Medallion Foundation. “We also want to promote aviation education in interior Alaska, so Medallion is providing this simulator to ensure the program’s success.”

"Aviation as a career path has long been a goal of the Alaska Air Carriers Assocation to create technical training in schools that would act as a pipeline to the airlines in Alaska," said seasoned Alaska flight instructor, Mike Morgan, owner of Proflite of Alaska (also an FSP client), http://www.proflitealaska.com.

The simulator, a Precision Flight Controls Cirrus II unit, runs XPlane software on two screens. The FAA authorized Aviation Training Device has all of the normal single engine Cessna, Piper and Diamond Katana aircraft.  It is located at the Nenana High School and is accessible to the flying public.  Adam White, President of the Alaska Airmen's Association, is the liaison and contact for the simulators use.

The non-profit Medallion Foundation, an aviation safety organization, was formed in 2001 by the Alaska Air Carriers Association and operates 18 (ATD) aircraft simulators statewide in Alaska.

For more information contact Jerry Rock, Executive Director, Medallion Foundation, at  907-743-8050 or Eric Gebhart, Nenana Superintendent, at  907-832-5464.

Kansas State University Selected to Test UAS........

KStateLogoAs part of an effort to begin creating industry standards for certifying unmanned systems for commercial applications within the National Airspace System (NAS), the FAA has selected FSP http://www.flightschedulepro.com/ client, Kansas State University, Salina, http://www.salina.k-state.edu, to test certification stands for small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).  K-State will use its own unmanned aircraft, those weighing 55 lbs. or less, to begin testing.  Test results will help establish standards to ascertain the airworthiness of small UAS.

This Agreement, the first of its kind between the FAA and a University, should help both the FAA and the unmanned systems industry to determine how standsards for small UAS should be developed.

Kurt Barnhart, Professor and Head of the Department of Aviation and Executive Director of K-State's Applied Aviation Research Center, says "This project is of national important in that this could well be the first small UAS to obtain an FAA airworthiness certificate for routine opertions in our national airspace system here in the lower 48".  Further, Barnhart said, "the airworthiness certificate will be most likely be developed as a "restricted" certification similar to those issued for agricultural aircraft, meaning that these vehicles would be restricted for operating above certain locations".

Unmanned Aircraft Systems Program Manager at K-State, Mark Blanks, commented "Successful certification of a small unmanned aircraft system using the F38 standards as a certification basis would be a giant step toward commercial use of unmanned aircraft in the national airspace system".

Flight Schedule Pro congratulates Kansas State University, Salina!
